Take Back Your Health – Post #1

Whole Fruit and Vegetable Diet

You are What You Eat!

Anyone who follows my posts or have read at least one of my posts knows I am sincere about my health. Last night I attended our first night of four Nutritional Workshops entitled “Take Back Your Health” facilitated Michael Sloan, at our church, Green Grove Baptist Church in West Berlin, NJ. Some of the highlights for me was confirmation about watching what you eat, and adding exercise to your daily routine.

He began by reminding us the we have the ability to heal ourselves by faith. He cited Jesus commending those who he healed:

Matt: 9:11 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment.

Matt: 9:29 Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith let it be done to you, and their sight was restored.

Luke 8:48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

However, there are many of us who have lost loved ones who we believe were strong in their faith, yet they still died. What about them. Well I believe there are two ways of looking at this. 1) All things come to pass because it is God’s will. 2) Faith without Works is Dead.

Mr. Sloan is teaching us how to reverse disease in our body by using our immune systems to accomplish this feat. God gave us our immune system for this purpose. The foods we each and exercise assist our immune systems.

Wow…as I write this “The Doctors” will be talking about will “Faith Heal You?”. I will definitely tune in. I believe Faith is the magic pill.

Walked this morning. I am walking with someone who is 40 years younger than myself. Mr. Sloan said if we are out of shape and we begin to exercise, we are starting out at square one. Although my young partner is younger, she admits to never walking. So she and I are walking as equals. If you do not use your muscles, you will lose your muscles.

If you do not use the gifts God gave you, you will lose them.

Psalm 103:1-5

Praise the Lord, my soul;

all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

Praise the Lord, my soul,

and forget not all his benefits—

who forgives all your sins

and heals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from the pit

and crowns you with love and compassion,

who satisfies your desires with good things

so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

GirlTrek – Team “Smart By Choice”

IMG_20140528_133754[1]On Wednesday, I had lunch with a young lady, Faye Paige Edwards, who I grew up with in Germantown, one of Philly’s surrounding neighborhoods. We had not seen each other in over 40 years. Yes, I said 40 years. We had a wonderful lunch and conversation. During our conversation, Faye told me about her passion for leading a healthy life and her involvement in the Girl Trek Movement. For the past seven years, I have been an active participant in the Morinda’s Tahitian Noni business where I learned a lot about health and wellness, and I have been really consistent in drinking the juice and using the other healthy products. Unfortunately, I have been inconsistent in my physical exercise. So when I Faye explained the Girl Trek Movement to me, I signed up right at the table.

I am a free spirit who has been self-employed for 29 1/2 years. That is a long time to call your own shots.  Not all of my decisions have been winners; and I am blessed the Lord has seen fit to allow me to do what I truly love as a vocation and avocation.  The idea is to do something for 30 minutes a day; walk, run, bike or swim.  I started walking yesterday for my first 30 minute session.

Girl Trek’s Story and their creed: “We are sick. We are down, but we are not out. Not by a long shot. We believe in the power of Black women to heal ourselves. We believe that we have everything we need to turn this health crisis upside down. We believe that the way forward is with inspiring everyday women to stand a health leaders in their communities and role models for their daughters. We believe in practical steps forward – in walking, in sweating out our perms, in finding time every single day to do something good for ourselves.”

As I posted on my facebook page this morning; I am serious about my health…I stepped up to a national platform by joining Girl Trek. Wilson-Smartrv1ugc5y_1401543018 symbolizes my life between the dashes. I was born a Wilson and now I am a Smart. People know me as One Smart Lady. Join me atwww.girltrek.org. You do not have to walk with me. Just walk in your neighborhood or favorite park.

The FIT Approach

FIT Body Composition System

Change Your Body - Change Your Life

I’m on my way to getting fit with the most comprehensive body composition program in the world.  Today is day one of my new nutritional routine which will also involve light exercise.  I want to get back into pilates for now and gradually work my way up to cardio dancing.

I am 60 years old and consistently reminded by my doctor that I’m pre-diabetic and borderline high blood pressure.  My goal is to lose 2 pounds a week until I reach my desired weight which is 140.  I have not seen 140 for about 20 years. So this blog will be my daily accountability and I plan to only weigh myself every Tuesday morning.

The FIT Approach

FIT Nutrition

The more nutritious the food you eat, the healthier you’ll be.  Our web-based menus and recipes help take the guesswork out of healthy eating.  (Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include seven grams of soluble fiber per day from psyllium husk may reduce the risk of heart disease.  One serving of FIT Reduce contains 2 grams of soluble fiber from psyllium husk.)

I printed off the web-based menu as a guideline. I won’t have every food item listed, but it will help me with my choices of food to eat. The most important thing to keep in mind is calorie intake and which foods to stay away from.  This has to be a lifestyle change not a diet that will be a temporary regiment. I want to build a routine that I can stay on for as long as my age will allow.

FIT Exercise

One of the most important things you can do to build lean muscle and burn fat is exercise.  That’s why our FIT website offers a wide range of workout plans and exercise ideas

I’ve never been into heavy aerobics, but I love pilates, ballet and taebo.  I have small hand weights for the strength training. The program has to be one that I will stick with. I have a gym membership and I haven’t be using it. I will probably start back once I build up my enthusiasm for exercising again. If I don’t I won’t beat myself up, but I will exercise.

FIT Groups

When starting the FIT program, we strongly recommend that you form a FIT group.  Members of a group can motivate, encourage, inspire, and support each other.

I have one other person on FIT right now and we are going to support and encourage each other. I hope that as you following my journey.

How the Fit Program Works

1. Calculate your daily calorie goal at fit.tni.com/2452425.

2. Start the Fit program by taking the products every day as directed on the label.

3. Eat healthy staying with your daily calorie goal.

4. Exercise six days a week with a strength and aerobic training.

5. Every seventh day is a free day. Eat as desired within moderation.

This is going to be my challenge because I hate to exercise, and I’m not in control of the meals. My mother-in-law is a great cook from Georgia. She’s 120 pounds soaking wet and doesn’t need to watch her weight.  She will be on me about eating enough because she will be concerned that I’m starving myself to death by her standards.

Well I’m going to give it my best.
