A Reflection of Who I Am

Life Lesson – One

Sometimes the challenge that generous people face is that their gifts, their blessings, and their pride get in the way of God’s Lessons. There comes a point in the midst of helping and serving that they must step back and get out of God’s way. Sometimes folk have to go through their struggle alone with only God helping them through. There was and is only one Savior…Jesus Christ.

It’s hard to turn your back on friends and family who are in need; for me it’s hard to turn my back on mostly anyone in need if I have it in my power to help them out.  In bible study, I am told that to grow as a Christian, I must be more like Christ, perfecting in love.

It may be hard for those who do not know Christ to understand this, but my life is richer because I lean on the written word of God…the Bible for understanding and wisdom.  Here are some examples of what God says about striving to be more like Christ and why.

Matthew 5:48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (NIV)

1 John 4:17-19 Love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him.  There is no fear in love.  But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.  The man who fears is not made perfect in love.  We love because he first loved us. (NIV)

1Peter 5:10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. (NIV)

Over the my next postings, I will be sharing with you my journey as I continue to work toward understanding what Paul meant in 1 Corinthians 13:1-9 as he wrote to the Church of Corinthians to teach him about Love.  Jesus commanded us (his disciples) to love one another. John 13:34 A new commandment I give you.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (NIV)

Now I can hear comments forming, she thinks that she is a disciple.  Yes I do.  I have this quirk about me to believe everything that Jesus said.  He told the original disciples in Matthew 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age.” (NIV)

So again, the struggle that people who believe in the commands of Jesus Christ have is not to go overboard with their “loving” others.  We have to remember that other people may not have the same understanding of what agape love is; and therefore mistakes are made and feelings are hurt.

In July, I had the privilege to deliver a message as a layman in my church, Green Grove Baptist Church on “Love is not Rude.”  It sparked a passion in researching and studying what Paul wrote about the agape love that the Church (we the people) should have and show each other.  I hope that my writings will be a blessing to you.  I also look forward to your comments.
